The iconic building at 160 Piccadilly boasts a captivating history that reflects both British heritage and European elegance. Its story began in 1921 when Wolseley Motors Limited commissioned the distinguished English architect William Curtis Green to design a grand car showroom at this prestigious address. Green’s vision for the space combined striking Venetian and Florentine-inspired details with opulent marble pillars and archways, creating a design that exuded sophistication and ambition. At its heart, the building featured a stunning domed ceiling and intricate monochrome geometric marble flooring, elements that remain defining features to this day.
Despite the grandeur of its architecture, Wolseley Motors faced financial challenges, and by 1926, the company fell into bankruptcy, leaving the future of this remarkable building uncertain. Over the decades, the space transitioned through various uses, yet its inherent elegance endured. It wasn’t until July 2003, however, that the next chapter of 160 Piccadilly truly came to life, when renowned restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King acquired the building. Their vision and dedication to honouring the architectural integrity of the site led to a meticulous restoration guided by David Collins Architects. This thoughtful refurbishment paid homage to Green’s original design while transforming the space into a timeless destination.
By November 2003, just four months after work began, The Wolseley opened its doors. Often referred to as ‘Piccadilly’s Shining Pearl’ during its time as a bank, the building was reborn as London’s first Grand Café—a venue inspired by the grand traditions of European café culture but anchored in British heritage. The Wolseley quickly earned acclaim, celebrated for its spectacular interior, refined yet approachable all-day dining, and flawless service, establishing itself as one of London’s most respected culinary institutions.
Today, The Wolseley is known the world over as a timeless symbol of elegance and quality. Whether you’re stopping by for a traditional Cream Tea, indulging in the celebratory flair of a Champagne Afternoon Tea, or savouring any of the classic dishes on offer, the experience reflects the rich history and enduring vision behind this extraordinary building.
