History of Taplow House in Maidenhead
Taplow House is a country house situated in the village of Taplow, just outside Maidenhead in Berkshire. The current house was built in 1882, replacing an earlier building which had been destroyed by fire.
The original Taplow House was built in 1525 and was the home of the Freke family for nearly 200 years. In 1717, the house was sold to Sir William Drake, who made several alterations and additions to the property. One of these was the construction of a new wing, which added an extra storey to the building.
Sir William Drake’s grandson, also Sir William Drake, inherited the property in 1787. He carried out further work on the house, including the installation of a grand staircase.
In 1882, the house was bought by Sir Julius Wernher, a German-born businessman who had made his fortune in the diamond mines of South Africa. Sir Julius set about making several changes to the property, including the construction of an extensive conservatory. He also commissioned several paintings and sculptures for the house, many of which can still be seen today.
Sir Julius Wernher died in 1912, and Taplow House was inherited by his son Hermann. Hermann continued to live at the house until he died in 1947.
The house was then sold to the Ministry of Education and was used as a teacher training college until 1974. After lying empty for several years, the house was bought by a property developer in 1980.
In recent years
The new owner began a major restoration project, and Taplow House was converted into luxury apartments. However, the project ran into financial difficulties and was eventually abandoned.
In 1985, the house was bought by its current owners, the Landmark Trust. The Trust embarked on an ambitious restoration project, and Afternoon Tea at Taplow House is now one of the most popular attractions in Maidenhead.
So if you’re looking for a taste of Afternoon Tea with a difference, make sure you pay a visit to Taplow House. With its stunning grounds and beautiful setting, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a traditional Afternoon Tea experience.
