History of Easthampstead Park Estate
The estate has a long and varied history, dating back to the 12th century when it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book. Easthampstead Park was once part of Windsor Forest and used as a hunting ground by royalty.
In 1544, King Henry VIII gifted the estate to his daughter Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I). After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the estate was bought by Sir William Sandys and remained in his family for generations.
In 1778, Easthampstead Park was bought by Sir George Bowyer, who commissioned architect James Paine to design a new mansion house on the site. The current Grade II listed building dates from 1824 and was designed by architect John Soane.
Easthampstead Park was used as a military hospital during both World Wars, before being sold to Bracknell Development Corporation in 1963. The mansion house and grounds were then opened to the public as a country park.
