From homemade bread and preserves for our delicate finger sandwiches to an array of decadent desserts, afternoon tea at Alexander House is a regal affair. Everything edible is created in-house by our pastry chefs and we source only the finest of Champagnes and quirkiest of teas (from Brighton-based tea company, Hoogly) to ensure every mouthful goes down a treat.
The concept of Afternoon Tea was founded in 1840 by the Duchess of Bedford, who found herself hungry between the long period of time between lunch and her fashionably late supper. The Duchess would request a tray of tea, bread and butter to be brought to her in the late afternoon. She later asked friends to join her for this occasion and thus a tradition was born.
Fun fact – it was the Earl of Sandwich who inspired the British love of sandwiches by introducing a filling between two slices of bread!
